Why Teach Empathy?

Teaching empathy to children helps them build a sense of security and strong relationships with others. Teaching empathy also helps students gain the ability of perspective shifting. This is an important skill that promotes tolerance and acceptance of others. Having empathy builds healthy minds and understanding. 

I Am Human Empathy Mini- Lesson

• Start off by asking the students: 
                       "What is empathy?"
• Allow students to share their prior knowledge of empathy with each other. This can be done in Think-Pair-Share partners or a Community Circle. 
• Read or share the book "I Am Human" 
• Have students turn and talk about their new found understanding from the book
  
• Have students complete the worksheet attached below
  
• Revisit this understanding throughout the year and teach other lessons on empathy. We can never have enough!
