TIER I

Tier 1 Universal Practice (All)
Tier 1 systems, data, and practices are in place to provide support for all students, staff, and teachers within the school setting. Adopting these practices sets the groundwork for constructive and anticipatory assistance. Tier 1 support is robust, differentiated and enables most (80%+) students to experience success in academic and behavioral progress.
Tier 1 Practices Include:
  • Working together with students, families, and educators to establish positive expectations for schools/programs and prioritize appropriate social, emotional, and behavioral abilities.
  • Ensuring consistency between classroom and school/program expectations
  • Explicitly teaching school-wide expectations and skills to set all students up for success
  • Acknowledging and commending positive behaviors through various systems of recognition
  • Ensuring respectful and instructional measures to prevent and address unwanted behavior
  • Building strong partnerships between schools/programs and families

Build Positive Relationships

Picture

 Relationships are Key

"No significant learning happens without a significant relationship."
-Dr. James Coner

A strong positive relationship is at the heart of every learning opportunity. Rita Pierson said it best when she said, "kids don't learn from teachers they don't like". Teachers should spend a large portion of time investing in building positive relationships with their students. Relationship building strategies should be built into lesson planning, just like academics. The strategies listed below can help build sustained positive relationships in the classroom for teachers and students.

Teach Expectations

It is important that students know what is expected of them at school. When teachers teach expectations for every environment of the school, they know what is expected of them. This saves instructional time, creates consistency and creates a successful student.
